Mt. Panorama kangaroo cull cruel: Greens

October 2, 2009

The cull of about 140 eastern grey kangaroos at Bathurst's Mt Panorama race track has raised the ire of environmentalists and the NSW Greens, who say it is an inhumane solution to a perceived safety problem.

Bathurst Regional Council authorised the cull, saying it was needed to ensure the safety of drivers

and visitors during the Bathurst 1000 car race, held in the central NSW town.

The cull was carried out under a licence from the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service, and more than halved the area's kangaroo population.

Angry NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon likened the unpublicised cull to "using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut".

She said many of the kangaroos would have had a joey "at foot and one in the pouch" at this time of year.

"The slaughter of 140 kangaroos and their joeys ... for the sake of a motorcar race is a knee-jerk response that is not justified," Ms Rhiannon said in a statement.

"Allowing the kangaroo slaughter for the sake of a car race is a dereliction of duty on the part of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Bathurst City Council.

"Council could herd the kangaroos away before the race to provide safety for them and motorists.

"There are other more humane and ethical ways of managing the possible safety risks."

Animal welfare group WIRES on Thursday said the cull had decimated the roo population on the mountain.

"Last year, when (a) kangaroo managed to make it across the race track without being hit by a racing car, the crowd cheered for it," WIRES spokeswoman Helen Bergen said in a statement.

"How would the crowd cheer if they knew 140 resident kangaroos had been shot for their public safety and enjoyment of the race?"

Bathurst environmentalist Ray Mjadwesch said the cull was inhumane and cruel.

"It would have been an incredibly terrifying experience for the joeys, being pulled out of the pouch, after their mother fell over," Mr Mjadwesch told the newspaper.

Last year council rounded the kangaroos up to avoid them from being hit, and it worked.
This year they could not be bothered using a method that actually worked; they opted for the easier way out: Shooting them.
